A guide as to what might constitute a deviation from the norm…

The numbered marking boxes on the DL25 form have been used here to show what is expected of the candidate in terms of outcomes and levels of competence for that particular aspect of their driving.

Examples of deviations from expected outcomes or levels of competence have been given to show what might lead to a mark on the form.

Each deviation can be marked as one of four possible outcomes as the fault escalates dependant on the impact (or potential impact) on other road users.

  • No fault marked (not noteworthy)
  • Driver fault (low risk to other road users)
  • Serious fault (high risk to other road users)
  • Dangerous fault (actual danger to other road users)

Note: If the effect is greater than the cause then the effect is marked. For example, if a candidate approached a junction too fast and emerged – then the effect (emerging) would be greater than the cause (speed on approach) so only the effect would be marked – junctions observation.

The diagram below may help to see how this fault escalating scale works
