I believe if we wish to get more from our practice areas, we really need to focus on what we are getting out of them. I often observe lessons and see a lot of time is spent dealing with things that are not on today’s subject. For example, a roundabout lesson that goes over pedestrian crossings. We need to try as best we can to avoid this, and something I get attendees at my standards check workshops to think about, it how much of the time during a lesson are we devoting to the subject at hand and how much is dealing with other “stuff”?
As ever, just my two pennerth and as ever, I am interested in your thoughts.
Kind regards
Bob
Hi Bob, Thanks for the video. I completely agree with your thoughts on practise areas but what happens when we can’t find suitable practise areas that just focus on the subject? How would you go about managing the stuff you haven’t covered yet?
As you have quite rightly identified, it is not always possible. However, i would urge you to look again at your area and think about how you could reduce the number of things you would have to include, and for sure include whatever you cant remove in the topic for that day, or at least have strategies for dealing with them.
It is, of course, vital when we are being assessed that we pay attention to all things safety critical, and an examiner wouldn’t like a lesson where you had tp talk them through (whatever it was) every time you came to it. It is an area that i see when conducting lesson assessments, and when reviewing video that people send me that doesn’t get enough attention, and then we face the criticism that no learning took place, or it wasn’t the right lesson for that pupil today. I hope that makes sense
Kind regards
Bob
Thanks Bob, I’ll look over my practise areas again with your comments in mind. Thank You
Hi Bob, just thinking about practise areas and been watching one of your videos on YouTube with Danielle. On her second lesson you do some work on gears but you have a long straight road to work with. Could you give me an idea which road that is (Google maps if possible) so I can compare it with roads I have nearby? Thanks Les
Hi Les
It’s Balne Moor Road, near Whitley Bridge
I’m not sure if this link will work or not…

Hi Bob, It’s so obvious now i’ve heard your comments. I let other areas of tuition get in the way of the lesson plan, and then have to alter the lesson when these things go wrong.
Hi Doug
Have a play around with it, you should see that you get much more completely “sorted”
Kind regards
Bob
