How we learn

The video below sets out a bit of a challenge to the way we as an industry seem to think learning happens. For years we have covered the same ground as ADIs, the more enlightened among us developing diverse ways of doing things, to match the needs of our learners, but often this was limited to thinking adaptions were needed for auditory, visual, or kinaesthetic learners. This was a good start as it meant we were aware not everyone is the same, BUT you cannot categorise the entire planet’s population into three boxes, we are much more diverse than that. In fact, there is research currently (as seen in the previous section) that would indicate this methodology is flawed.

So, an approach needs to be utilised that matches every lesson to the learner doing the learning, and this is what coaching tries to do.

For the most part, in our industry, we are trying to put learning into the learner. I would advocate an approach where we attempt to get the learning out. In this way the strength and depth of learning can be enhanced, and we should have learners happy to take more responsibility for their own learning as well as responsibility for their own actions.

How we learn

Throughout this membership you will be encouraged to take a journey into coaching at a level you feel comfortable, utilising the things that work for you, and more importantly, developing your own strategies and techniques. The journey into coaching was an incredible one for me, and I hope that you all gain the joy that I have found on the coaching path.
